Dreaming of getting your bachelor’s or postgraduate degree Down Under? But if you were thinking about getting a student visa after you arrive, there’s been a recent update (as of July 1st, 2024) you need to know about and StudentWorld is here to break it down in simple terms:

New Visa Rules: What You Need to Know

Previously, you could apply for a student visa even if you were already visiting Australia on a tourist visa. Now, things are a bit different. You can no longer apply for a student visa while you’re already in Australia with these types of visas:

  • Visitor Visa (Subclass 600): This is for sightseeing and short stays (up to 3 months).
  • Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485): This is for those who just finished their studies in Australia.

Full List of Affected Visas:

  • Subclass 485 (Temporary Graduate)
  • Subclass 600 (Visitor)
  • Subclass 601 (Electronic Travel Authority)
  • Subclass 602 (Medical Treatment)
  • Subclass 651 (eVisitor)
  • Subclass 988 (Maritime Crew)

Previously Restricted Visas:

  • Subclass 403 (Temporary Work (International Relations)) – Domestic Worker (Diplomatic or Consular) stream
  • Subclass 426 (Domestic Worker (Temporary) – Diplomatic or Consular)
  • Subclass 771 (Transit)
  • Subclass 995 (Diplomatic Temporary) – primary visa holders only

Why the Change?

Australia wants to make sure everyone with a student visa is there for the right reasons – to get a top-notch education and build a successful career! This helps ensure spots go to students who planned their studies in advance.
