New Visa Rules: What You Need to Know
Previously, you could apply for a student visa even if you were already visiting Australia on a tourist visa. Now, things are a bit different. You can no longer apply for a student visa while you’re already in Australia with these types of visas:
- Visitor Visa (Subclass 600): This is for sightseeing and short stays (up to 3 months).
- Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485): This is for those who just finished their studies in Australia.

- Subclass 600 (Visitor)
- Subclass 601 (Electronic Travel Authority)
- Subclass 602 (Medical Treatment)
- Subclass 651 (eVisitor)
- Subclass 988 (Maritime Crew)
Previously Restricted Visas:
- Subclass 403 (Temporary Work (International Relations)) – Domestic Worker (Diplomatic or Consular) stream
- Subclass 426 (Domestic Worker (Temporary) – Diplomatic or Consular)
- Subclass 771 (Transit)
- Subclass 995 (Diplomatic Temporary) – primary visa holders only
