As of March 23, 2024, the Australian Government has replaced the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement for student visas with a Genuine Student (GS) requirement. This update applies to student visa applications submitted after this date.

What is the Genuine Student Requirement?

The GS requirement replaces the previous Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement and applies to all student visa applications lodged on or after March 23, 2024. It is designed to assess the applicant’s genuine intention to study in Australia and their commitment to complying with visa conditions.

Key Criteria of the Genuine Student Requirement

To meet the Genuine Student requirement, applicants must provide detailed information about their personal circumstances, immigration history, and future plans. This includes:

Applicant Information Required Documentation
Previous Study Academic transcripts, certificates of attainment
Previous Study in Australia Complete study record(s), reasons for changes in course or education providers
Current Employment Details of current employer, period of employment, confirmation of employment from a contact person
Circumstances in Home Country Explanation of personal ties, reasons for not studying locally, economic situation
Situations in Australia Knowledge of the proposed course, planned accommodation, financial stability
Value of Course to Future Relevance to employment goals, expected salary and benefits, alignment with future plans
Immigration History Visa and travel history, previous applications, any visa refusals or cancellations

How is the GS Different from the GTE?

The Genuine Student requirement replaces the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement and introduces a question-and-answer format. Targeted questions cover the applicant’s current circumstances, course choice, and study history (if within Australia) among other topics. Additionally, applicants will need to confirm in the student declaration that they understand being a genuine student entails coming to Australia with the primary intent of studying.

Why It Matters

The Genuine Student requirement plays a vital role in upholding the quality and integrity of the Australian education system. By ensuring that visa applicants are genuinely committed to their studies, it fosters a conducive environment for academic excellence and student success.
